Hey everyone what are your thoughts on these questions? This was posted on another board I belong too. I was wondering what our answers would be as we are dealing with APBT not shih-poos and whatever designer breed is hot today.


1st: What needs to be covered in the legislation to curb puppymills, byb, and for money purebred breeders? In otherwords, spay/neuter regs, how decide if someone should breed? How and who should determine when should spay/neuter? Etc. Remember that we are trying to make legislation that can be enforceable that will help curb the millions of dogs that end up in shelters, etc. We have such heated discussions about why people buy purebreds and criticize people who do not rescue but it is a 2 fold problem. It must be handled from the bottom up meaning the fewer unwanted dogs. The better care they can get at shelters and the fewer dogs euthanized.



2nd: Enforcement- Who and how should it be enforced? What should be the penalties? How to fund? What should penalties be? Who and how should it be enforced? What should be the penalties? How to fund? What should penalties be?



3rd: What are the challenges going to be from lobby groups representing who? UKC ABDA?

Well, IMO there should be no legislation, or enforcement by any government or law enforcement regarding breeding. I think that there will always be a market for these dogs and it will always go on until long after we are gone. I'm not willing to sacrifice my right to freedom so that others can be forced to do what it right. I absolutely do not want my tax dollars going to fight a futile battle. It's a sad, sad world when grown adults need to be forced to make rational decisions but another "law" or "ordinance" is the last thing we need.

Okay I don't like laws either but what puppy mills. Or we have a problem up here we have a group, I should say family, that breeds dogs mixes but they have a shelter too. Now these people say that these dogs come from other sources when in fact they are their own. They get all kinds of donations. They also work with a pet shop owner and the puppies are being sold for 300 or more. I think that they shouldn't be allowed to do this. Also on the other side of us is a puppy mill with around 300 dogs you never see all the dogs they are all over the place. If the dogs were healthy I wouldn't have as much trouble with it but the dogs mostly shih tzu and lhasa apsa. What about thoe that have all these dogs for the wrong purpose. We also have a pitbull farm. I haven't been there because you need to be invited it is very close to or it is on the Red Lake Reservation. Only the feds can go there so if these people were fighting the dogs you would have to get the federal government involved.
I think that should be some rules. I think that if you want x number of dogs then yes you need a license. I think it should be inspected yearly just like dairy farms or chicken farmers. I think that if they sell a pet quailty animal it should have to be spayed. I think that anyone caught dumping an animal should have a stiff fine. I also think that people who continuely get puppies cause they are so cute but they don't want the dog should not be allowed to have an animal.

I don't even know where to begin..Buzz has a point though.
First and formost enforcement should be looked into exstensively.
If there is any lack or slack in enforcement all attempts are made in vein.
I'm going to ponder this a while..
