| Okay, so, I know you're supposed to use the crimper (dunno what it's called at the moment) to kinda cut off and tie the embelical chord. How do you go about doing that and where can I find one? | |

| ok...I don't ever tie off the umbilical cord. I use a sharp pair of cutting scissors, STERILIZED to cut the cords, I cut them about 2 finger widths long, and leave that much, so about an inch, inch and half. I don't cut really close because I don't care for all the bleeding, and it does fall off itself.
After your done cutting the cord, use alcohol or iodine and blot the cord. Make sure you don't leave the pup bleeding.

| yeah most of the time you are not even going to have to worry about cutting the cords, the mother does all the work, after abut 7-8 pups though they start to get pretty tired and don't really want to fool with all of that and half clean them, OR if the pups are coming back to back then she won't have time to do so, so in those cases then yes I use a pair of sterile scissors and tie the cord off with thread soaked in alcohol... | |

| hmm never heard of the dental floss, could be a good idea I guess. lol I do ALL my cords, and am there for the entire birthing process, I clean the pups, cut the cords, and give them back to mom, the only thing I don't do is take the afterbirth. I do my own cords because there is less of a risk for umbilical hernia if you cut your own cords. | |
