| I am so excited !!! I have been waiting so long to get back into the vet field and I finally made it. I will start working at one of our local vet offices on Wednesday. I can't wait. I'm also going to try to keep my current job part time as well, if my boss will let me. Wish me luck !!! | |

| my step mom is kinda pissing me off about this. she is my STEP mom, but has been as much a part of my life as my real mom so i can understand her being pushy and all about this, and i am not really ungrateful for her concern but... i have a family, i've always wanted one. obviously i didnt have a real when growing up or else i wouldnt have needed a step mom (my folks divorced when i was 2 and my dad remarried) anyway she always hoped one of us (my two half sisters and me) would become a vet. My youngest sister has no interest. she likes animals but has always lost interest after the new wore off and the puppy grew up etc. my other sister is far too squeemish, but i think she's talked herself into it. she was helping care for orphaned new born puppies and they were sick and dying. the smell of them really got to her and supposedly she passed out from it. since then she has decided she cant handle sick or injured animals. i wasnt there so i dont know what happened, or what was wrong with the puppies. so now my step mom is looking at me like "Well if you didnt have kids and werent married YOU could be a vet". she keeps talking like i have lost my chance to do this. i am only 24 years old and my kids are both under the age of two, plus i have a husband, not like i am doing this alone. i'm a stay at home mom, i dont have to work.... i WOULD like to have one more kid some day and then focus on school, and that is the plan, but we all know about the "Best laid plans of mice and men" but if all goes well... i would love to go to vet school. Her motives are different from mine. i wouldnt care how much i got paid, wouldnt care if i earned peanuts, i just want to be able to save some animals lives and help folks out that wont take their pets to the vet because they cant afford to which makes the animal suffer needlessly. I have been in the vet's office with an injured dog in my arms and have been turned down because they didnt have a payment plan. the dog had been hit by a car.... if it hadnt been for my friend standing right there and paying FOR me... my dog would have died. I may never be a vet... but i would settle for vet tech for a while until i could get the schooling to be a doctor. i just dont know what it will take, how much it will cost, or how long i will be in school. i know it isnt something that happens in just four years like most college courses. i dont even know if there is a vet school anywhere near me..... i guess its something i need to look in to if i really want to do it. i really envy you folks that do this for a living.... lol if i ever did get to become a vet then i could have all the cats and dogs i want!! | |

| Its definitely not a job for the "average joe" as it is a job that entails alot of work. I started in the field fresh out of high school and that is where my passion for the APBT all started from. I then went on to work for our county humane society after that. I then left the field all together as well as the dogs until I met my husband 5 years ago. Together we have re-entered the dog scene and I am in pursuit of my life long dream at the ripe old age of 30 (31 in June....lol). It is never too late to persue your dreams if that is truly what you want to do, than you have to go get it. If you truly want to work in the vet field and that is where you'd truly be happiest, then the pay wouldn't matter as it doesn't to me. For example, I have a very good paying job where I'm at now as a vacation specialist, however I am not happy here. I enjoy the people that I work with and I appreciate my immediate supervisor, but if it weren't for her and her efforts to constantly fight for us, we wouldn't have the things we do not within our jobs. The company itself does not appreciate my department. We used to get pretty healthy quarterly bonuses but now they have taken those bonuses away from us and gave us what they call a .75 cent raise. When in all reality it wasn't a taise at all, all they did was roll our bonuses into our weekly paychecks. If they really valued our employment and work efforts, they would have increased our hourly salary and still given us the bonuses. So, now I have the opportunity to return to the vet field with a bit of a pay dcrease, but with a company that believes in their employees and values their work. Not only that, there is plenty of room for advancement, another down fall with the job I have now, no room for advancement. I guess the moral of my story, I'd rather be at a job where I'm happy than to just go to work for the sake of saying I have a job. | |

well the funny thing about that is my step mom said out of the blue one day when we were kids (probably oblivious to what was happening to make her say it) was NEVER stay at a job that you were unhappy with.. no matter what. but since then she has kinda changed her views slightly. i know she still believes that, but i have to say that my step mom has been through heck these past few years. some she brought on her self, and some just happened, so i think she has reached a complacency point. you know like "what ever.. its a job, it pays well enough and i've been through worse" which is really kinda sad when i see someone get like that. maybe thats why she is bugging me every time we talk about going into this field. i would absolutely love to do it. lately i have been thinking a lot about volunteering at a shelter. i am not a pro dog trainer, but i have trained a good few in my 24 yrs, so i think i could be of some use at a shelter. not just someone to walk dogs, but to actually WORK with them. our town doesnt even have a shelter. the county wont support it for some reason. all we have is a rescue/foster group. i would participate in that but i already have one foster(stray) plus my two bigger bullies, and some ducklings my mom didnt have time for, and a cat, and a rabbit, and a turtle.... not to mention two babies and a husband and a house to keep after. i'm not worried about being overwhelmed. i can handle it, the more work i have to do the better because i am the type of person that HAS to keep busy or i'll go nuts. but my husband doesnt seem to feel that way. he comes home and sees all this action going on, kids on the loose, dogs barking, stuff being chewed on or missing, well.... lol he wants to come home and relax, not work, and i dont blame him.... so it would be best, i suppose, if i did this stuff else where just to keep him from losing his mind in all the madness

| Seems like she's the one that really wanted to be the vet but never pursued her dream and is now trying to live it through you, or, she could just be wanting the best for you and seems to think you would like being a vet being being that you seem to be an animal lover. | |

| thats been my thought too. she cant be accused of never caring, i must admit to that. when she found out her youngest daughter was going to get married she got upset.. and then when she found out she was going to have a baby.. she was upset again, even though she adores her grandson to no end, i think she wanted her daughter to go to college and get out in the world before settling down so soon. but like you said, its never to soon to live your dreams. my step mom is in her mid forties, if she wanted to go back to school and do this stuff she could, but she keeps saying she is too old... ha!! too old is too dead in my opinion.... | |

You're never too old to do anything. It just depends on your drive and willingness to go get it.
