| A bunch of people told me to use newspaper. But I have a question on this one. We really don't have nany newspaper right now, so could we use horse shavings? They aren't huge and they aren't a fine powder. Would that be okay or would sticking with newspaper be better? | |

| Cedar shavings are good but don't use them til the pups are around 3 weeks. Use newspaper or old blankets first. While the pups are still practicly new borns the shavings my cause probs with nasal passages. | |

| We always used old blankets or sheets, they work great. they absorb better than newspapers, keeps the pups cleaner, exspecailly when the start going potty on their own. Plus if you don;t have any old ones you can buy cheapies and they can be washed! | |

I also use old sheets and blankets, we have specific ones we use just for whelping pups. when they are soiled we just put them in the washer bleach and vala you got clean ones for the next time you change everything out.

| Yeah the blankets and sheets are the best idea for younger pups. They absorb good and help keep the pups warm. You can back them up with newspaper to help absorb some of the mess.
I would use the shaving for the older dogs though.

| This is what we ended up doing.
We lined the bottom of the box with a big sleeping bag, then we put a tarp on top of the sleeping bag to make sure nothing seeped through into the bag. Then we put a top sheet on top of the tarp then put 3 big towels on top of the sheet.
So she's comfy and warm! Lol.

| Oh I count them at least 24 times a day. I go in about every hour to check on her, then at night I wake up about every 2 to 3 hours to count/check on the puppies. | |
